Head of Happiness - legitimate job role or just delegation from the top?

Man with two thumbs up - main image for article discussing the merits of a 'Head of Happiness' job role

Acclaimed entrepreneur Steven Bartlett has recently been on the hunt for a Head of Happiness and Health for his media investment company FLIGHTSTORY.

With a tagline asking, ‘Is this the best job ever?’, the job advertisement has naturally garnered huge attention. While many are singing the praises of The Diary of a CEO podcast host for such a bold move, others are calling out whether such a role is valid or just ‘pie in the sky’. In reality, the buck for the job details listed stop entirely with the business leader.

By its very definition, happiness is ‘a state of emotional well-being characterised by feelings of joy, contentment and fulfilment’. Let's be honest, a constant state of joy is somewhat of a pipedream. Fulfilment, on the other hand? Now that is worth focusing on. If what you're doing aligns with what you enjoy and are good at and you believe you’re making a worthwhile contribution, then that certainly is a positive outcome.

As a leader, you can't just expect your team to be happy all the time, but you can make a huge contribution to their sense of happiness and achievement. How?

✔️ Clarity of purpose - does everyone know why the company exists & what you're trying to achieve?

✔️ Clarity of roles - does everyone know their role in relation to the company purpose? Are they in a position suited to their skills or interests, with a clear path for development & progression?

✔️ Clarity of values - does everyone know the core beliefs that help shape your company & the accompanying behaviours that are expected of them?

✔️ Culture - are you fostering a workplace environment that is welcoming, inclusive & open to honest conversation & contributions from all without fear of retribution or ridicule?

✔️ Empathy - do you acknowledge that not everything in life runs smoothly & some of your team may be struggling?

✔️ Appreciation/Recognition/Remuneration - do you show each team member how valued they are?

The truth is that the above needs to come from the top, not through delegation to others.

But the results will certainly pay dividends, with any genuine feeling of happiness and fulfilment helping to boost motivation, productivity and commitment!
